A serious incident occurred on Thursday, March 26 near Kalalau Beach at the end of the Kalalau Trail. At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026, an Airborne Aviation helicopter crashed at remote Kalalau Beach on Kaua‘i’s Nāpali Coast.

What We Know So Far

According to preliminary reports from the Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD), the aircraft was carrying one pilot and four passengers at the time of the incident. The crash resulted in three fatalities, with two others transported to Wilcox Medical Center for treatment.

The remote nature of Kalalau Beach required a massive coordinated response from multiple agencies, including:

  • Kaua‘i Fire Department (Hanalei Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1)
  • U.S. Coast Guard
  • Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency
  • American Medical Response (AMR)
  • Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR)

First responders were dispatched shortly after the crash was reported. While the extent of the injuries has not been officially released, medical personnel were on the scene throughout the late afternoon to provide emergency care and facilitate transport to medical facilities.

History of Helicopter Crashes

  • December 26, 2019 – Seven people killed when a Safari Aviation helicopter hit a mountain because of bad visibility during bad weather.
  • July 11, 2024 – Three people were killed when a Ali’I Air helicopter crashed along the Nāpali Coast.

Impact on Hikers and Campers

For those currently on the trail or planning to depart in the coming days:

  • Trail Access: There are currently no reports of the Kalalau Trail being closed to hikers; however, expect increased activity from emergency aircraft and personnel near the beach and landing zones.
  • Respect the Scene: If you are camping at Kalalau, please give first responders and investigators space to work. The crash site will likely be cordoned off for an investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
  • Safety First: This incident serves as a reminder of the extreme remoteness of the Nāpali Coast. In the event of emergencies, response times are dictated by weather and the availability of air assets.

Looking Ahead

The cause of the crash is currently unknown and will be subject to a federal investigation. Our thoughts are with the pilot, the passengers, and their families during this difficult time.
