Kalalau Trail closed due to weather/landslide
A landslide along the Kuhio Highway has closed the road that leads to Hanalei and the Kalalau Trail. The landslide occurred on the morning of March 11, 2021. Initial estimates are that it could take 3 months to fully reopen....
Kalalau Trail Permits are Now Available
Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park permits are now available on the State’s website. Permits can be purchased up to 30 days prior to your visit.
First 2-miles of the Kalalau Trail to reopen with requirements

DLNR Produces New Kalalau Trail Safety Video

Camping Permits Now Required To Hike Beyond Hanakāpīʻai Valley

62 People airlifted from Kalalau on Christmas Eve
The Kaua‘i Fire Department has airlifted over 60 people from the Kalalau Valley today after multiple streams became impassable.
One male hiker suffered a non-life threatening injury and was flown to Princeville Airport, where awaiting medics transported him to Wilcox Hospital.
10 people stranded
County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said the Kauai Fire Department reported about 10 individuals were stranded on the far side of Hanakapiai Stream around 4 p.m. on Monday. Ocean Safety personnel made contact with the group and provided them with food and water to remain overnight, since weather conditions did not allow for a rescue.

One dead, one injured in Kalalau Trail accident
The Coast Guard (Honolulu Command Center) responded to a medevac request from the Kauai Fire Department late on Thursday night, August 28, 2014. A 24-year old hiker had reportedly fallen from a remote part of the Kalalau Trail, along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai. The Coast Guard arrived on scene around 12:04 am on Friday.
National Recognition Given to Kauai Firefighters for Kalalau Rescue
Several Kauai Firefighters were given national recognition for their part in the rescue of 121 hikers stranded at Hanakapiai when the stream flooded. They were awarded the 2014 International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Benjamin Franklin Fire Service Award for Valor. The ceremony was held in Dallas, Texas. They were nominated for the award by one of the persons rescued back in April.
