Heroism on the Kalalau Trail: Kauai Police Officer Honored for Selfless Rescue

Today, we’re sharing an inspiring story of bravery and compassion that unfolded on this iconic trail, highlighting the dedication of the Kaua’i Police Department.
On July 22, 2025, at approximately 7 p.m., a call came in reporting a missing hiker on the Kalalau Trail. Without a moment’s hesitation, Officer Matthew VanAken responded. Acting swiftly and decisively, he ventured alone onto the trail as dusk began to settle, determined to locate the missing individual.
Nearly a mile into the challenging hike, Officer VanAken found the distressed hiker. The hiker was suffering from severe muscle cramping and dehydration, a stark reminder of the physical demands the Kalalau Trail can impose. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Officer VanAken assessed the hiker’s condition and made a truly selfless decision.
With remarkable strength and unwavering commitment, Officer VanAken employed the fireman’s carry, hoisting the hiker onto his shoulders. He then began the arduous trek back towards safety in the dark. Throughout the physically demanding journey, Officer VanAken remained calm and attentive, constantly reassuring the hiker and monitoring their well-being. His focus and determination were unwavering as he navigated the difficult terrain.
Finally, Officer VanAken and the rescued hiker emerged from the trail, where awaiting medical personnel were ready to provide immediate care. Thanks to Officer VanAken’s swift action and selfless efforts, a potentially dangerous situation was resolved safely.
The Kaua‘i Police Commission formally recognized Officer VanAken’s exceptional response on August 22, 2025. He was awarded the prestigious Police Commendation Medal, a testament to his bravery, compassion, and dedication to serving the community.
